VANCOUVER, BC (SEPTEMBER 22, 2022) Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) is pleased to announce the complete film lineup for Special Presentations and Showcase, in addition to the participants in this year’s Catalyst program. Special Presentations are highly anticipated films screening in the festival’s marquee venue and Showcase presents exceptional cinema that will resonate strongly with VIFF audiences. All films will be presented in-cinema. Catalyst is a cohort-based facilitated mentorship program presented by Scotiabank and supported by Creative BC that provides emerging filmmakers with the tools they need to embolden their cinematic voices.
“Special Presentations brings together the titles that have been making waves at festivals across the world,” says Alan Franey, International Programmer and Festival Director Emeritus. “The program features narrative and documentary films that depict journeys to seek the truth. From the nuanced social politics behind why Vancouver no longer has an NBA team, to a neo-noir set in South Korea, to an investigation of the true evils in a Mennonite community, to the dark secret behind a colony in Bolivia, these stories captivate from the opening credits.”
Highlights include: the world premiere of The Grizzlie Truth, a documentary by Kathleen S. Jayme that sets out to solve the true sports crime of who robbed us of the Vancouver Grizzlies; the Canadian premiere of Cannes’ Grand Prix winner Stars at Noon, Claire Denis’ languid adaptation of Denis Johnson’s novel that follows a young freelance writer marooned in Managua; virtuoso Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook’s Decision to Leave, a neo-noir mystery about a homicide detective who falls in love with a widow that won him the Director Prize at Cannes; and Sarah Polley’s Women Talking, a riveting adaptation of Miriam Toews’ novel, which features a stellar cast that includes Jessie Buckley, Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, and Frances McDormand.
“This year’s Showcase films will delight Vancouver audiences with their formidable cinematic craft and nuanced storytelling,” says Curtis Woloschuk, Director of Programming. “The films offer us a glimpse into the creative process of one of the world’s greatest living choreographers, delve into the complexities of motherhood and female friendships, and offer insights into the psyches of serial killers and those who are determined to stop them.”
Highlights include: the world premiere of Crystal Pite: Angels’ Atlas, Chelsea McMullan’s sublime and cathartic documentary that captures the 2021 rebirth of the National Ballet of Canada’s final show before the pandemic shutdown; the world premiere of Ryuichi Hiroki’s Motherhood, a richly atmospheric and utterly captivating story of a woman who loves her mother but can’t muster the same feelings for her daughter; the Canadian premiere of Berlinale Silver Bear winner for Supporting Performance Before, Now & Then, Kamila Andini’s Indonesian 1960s period drama that offers a rare glimpse into the emotional life of a woman who escapes war and enters the pampered existence of a passionless marriage; and Cannes’ Best Actress winner Holy Spider, in which Ali Abbasi follows the journey of an Iranian journalist who becomes obsessed with bringing a serial killer in her hometown to justice.
“Over the years, Catalyst has built a reputation in the industry and the community as the premier platform for emerging filmmakers and artists,” says Laura Arboleda, Catalyst Programmer. “This unique initiative has worked closely with creatives to ensure that the program is not only decolonized, but actively fosters under-represented filmmakers. Through a series of one-on-one mentorships and intimate panels, we champion emerging filmmakers and help them take their careers to the next level. We’re thrilled to announce this year’s 2022 cohort and know that the broader film community will be hearing their names much more in the future.”
The 2022 cohort is Mariam Barry, Dide Su Bilgin, Robin Dalla-Vicenza, David Granneman, Kimberly Ho, Jae Lew, Shane Leydon, Nathalie Lopez-Gutierrez, Kay Metchie, Giselle Miller, Ryley O’Byrne, Clara Salameh, Hannah Siden, Edson Sithole, Liliya Syvytskaya, and Daniel Wester.
