“GOLDEN DELICIOUS”, the first feature film from director Jason Karman, producer Kristyn Stilling, and writer Gorrman Lee premieres at the Vancouver International Film Festival on October, 5, 2022. The timely and uplifting film, which captures the complexities of coming out queer in an Asian Canadian family, is an official selection of Telefilm Canada’s 2020 Talent To Watch program.

Jason, Kristyn, and Gorrman created the film with the desire to carve out the space for underrepresented people and communities to tell their stories. With this film, they celebrate queer representation and bring Asian Canadian stories and characters to the forefront, offering an honest and nuanced portrayal of the modern Asian Canadian family. They also explore the pervasive, and often negative role social media plays in our lives, and how much more amplified it is for teens and youth.

“The film calls on viewers to recognize the emotions that run through every human being — love, hope, happiness, confusion, hurt, shame — and to reflect on our shared experiences and humanity” says Stilling.

Karman adds: “In Asian families, sexuality is often hidden to “save face”, however, what is the impact of carrying this shame? Can you reach your maximum potential if you suppress an aspect of yourself?”

Produced with a limited budget and at the height of the pandemic, it’s taken resourcefulness and grit to bring Golden Delicious to audiences. Through tireless and meticulous preparation, production focused on safety while providing a professional first-feature work experience for many of the dedicated cast and crew. Attracted by Gorrman Lee’s outstanding script, the team all believed in the importance — and necessity — of telling this story and reflecting truth through a widened lens.

In this coming-of-age drama for the digital age, Jake Wong is caught between his father’s expectations and his own burgeoning desires. Set against quintessential East Vancouver cityscapes, the film reveals the trials (and humor) of the emerging self and builds into a portrait of what family means as they all fight to find happiness and live their lives authentically.
