FIRST FILMS is a new film festival dedicated to introducing Sydney audiences to daring debut works from emerging directors. Celebrating its first edition with two Australian premieres and two Sydney premieres, FIRST FILMS will take place from 18 – 20 November 2022 at Golden Age Cinema and Bar in Surry Hills, Sydney. Programmed by film curator Paul Struthers, FIRST FILMS aims to challenge, inspire and entertain.
Beba (2021) – Australian Premiere

First-time feature filmmaker Rebeca “Beba” Huntt undertakes an unflinching exploration of her own identity in the remarkable coming-of-age documentary/cinematic memoir Beba. Reflecting on her childhood and adolescence in New York City as the daughter of a Dominican father and Venezuelan mother, Huntt investigates the historical, societal and generational trauma she’s inherited, while simultaneously considering the universal truths that connect us all as humans.
FIRST TIME [The Time for All but Sunset – VIOLET] (2021) – Australian Premiere

Winner of Best Narrative Feature at Athens International Film and Video Festival, FIRST TIME [The Time for All but Sunset – VIOLET] charts an unexpected connection on a Hamburg subway. A young man is sitting at the window of the Hamburg subway. Passengers come and go – another young man sits down. The two face each other as the subway circles around the city, stealing glances as the day turns to night. Is this just a fleeting connection, or will this lead to something more?
The Apartment with Two Women (2021) – Sydney Premiere

Winner of five awards at Busan International Film Festival including Best Actress and the New Currents award, The Apartment with Two Women is an uncompromising and superbly performed mother-daughter tale. Yi-jung lives with her mother Su-kyung, but they do not get along well. While out grocery shopping one day, they fight as usual and Su-kyung’s car ends up hitting Yi-jung in the parking lot. Yi-jung does not believe Su-kyung’s claim that the car suddenly accelerated on its own, and thinks her mother hit her on purpose.
Faya Dayi (2021) – Sydney Premiere

In her hypnotic documentary feature, Ethiopian-Mexican filmmaker Jessica Beshir explores the coexistence of everyday life and its mythical undercurrents. Though a deeply personal project — Beshir was forced to leave her hometown of Harar with her family as a teenager due to growing political strife — the film she returned to make about the city, its rural Oromo community of farmers, and the harvesting of the country’s most sought-after export (the euphoria-inducing khat plant) is neither a straightforward work of nostalgia nor an issue-oriented doc about a particular drug culture.
