People who dare attend short film festivals certainly belong to the bravest and most curious, because these kind of programs and films aren’t usually discussed in advance in the same way as feature films. So viewers can find themselves getting involved in adventures. Open to new experiences, they surrender to the curators’ artfulness and revel in the discoveries they encounter.

More than 350 films will be screened at INTERFILM and KUKI: Original narratives, burning issues, offbeat plots and agitating content can be found in various competitions, the focus, in virtual reality, in film talks, as part of a spectacle or accompanied by a live soundtrack. And finally back at the cinema! At INTERFILM in 8 venues – at KUKI in 6.
Feast your eyes on the festival programs for INTERFILM and KUKI.

Among them are prominent films that have already won awards. When asked about this year’s stars, festival producer Alexander Stein says: “For us, all selected filmmakers are stars because we love their films. Fame is possibly yet to come for many of the younger creatives. Maybe after our festival”.

Innovative filmmakers encounter an engaged audience, including both the young and the young-at-heart. They don’t care about the star hype, because short film festivals are a starting point, a springboard, a catalyst. There is an appreciation of communication, fun and the inspiring films (of others). In this way, creatives meet audiences on equal ground.

Short film festivals are like disco. They offer cinematic dances in the stroboscope of the zeitgeist. Short doesn’t mean TikTok, the short film form is more like a parachute jump, a free fall that makes the blood rush to your head.

The magic of the curators’ wand lies in the desire to enable their chosen selection of films to shine amongst a pallette of the breath-taking, experiential, enjoyable and insightful. Contrary to the bias of news coverage that only gauges what is foreign by comparison with itself, these international works are not a matter of exoticism, but of authentic impact.

Festivals make you resistant to kitsch! KUKI, the interfilm festival for children and youth, practices this in a radically refreshing way: here the young are spared the Pixar-wannabes and pedagogical posturing. It gets right down to business, especially since kids have been involved in much of the programming.

Festival audiences experience the world as it will never be encountered again. The composition of programs is unique: festivals are at the forefront of the educational mission of communicating the global. While the films may be fun, it’s about the essence of discerning the world. A festival is a world voyage.

We’ re all in a boat and it isn’t an ark: Perceiving the world is complicated, but this complexity can also generate enthusiasm: So here’s to thought instead of idiocy, life instead of gloom, festival hustle instead of streaming. Wait: INTERFILM can also be enjoyed online via SOONER, streaming all the way to Austria!

Full of verve, full of nerve, a festival like INTERFILM offers the opportunity to try and fathom the world and find the eye of the needle we all have to collectively pass. And that eye may well become huge. – Welcome to the festival!
