INTERFILM 38 International Short Film Festival Berlin
15 – 20 November 2022

Organizing a film festival is no easy feat when the boomer years are finally numbered, as the cherished illusions of growth-oriented societies crumble against the reality of a crisply overheating world and war rages just around the corner.

What makes one even more dizzy is watching everything go on with all the usual distractions: Rehearsed rites of cohesion and political effectiveness are routinely invoked and celebrated, a bit of distinction here, some pink- or greenwashing there. Buzzwords have to suffice, and they have sufficed often enough.

What is it that film, what is it that cinema can still do? Let’s not kid ourselves, it’s not much! But: A central task of cinema was and is to make reality visible by taking and showing other perspectives and thus to enable a relationship to it in the first place.

In cinema, images reflect on life. In this way, it has always provided the tools for a change in reality. Nothing has to remain as it is, because cinema already dreams of the Other and the audience only has to engage with this dream.

In film, one recognizes a counterpart and discovers that one’s own thoughts can also be those of others. It begins with the connectivity in the darkened space and ends with the change on the public street.

Curatorial force can be a stimulus as well as a wake-up call to awaken and become active together. It is not only the films that must conquer the world, but we, the people, must join together in action. After the cinema, on this side of the street, there may be better things to do than the usual pub crawl.

No pressure: People are not obliged to concern themselves with Fortress Europe, but they can and may visit the three programs of “Ghosts of Europe” in order to playfully test their own talent for solidarity. The environmental film competition, like all the other challenging sections and programs, can also be enjoyed simply for the sake of the good films. The interfilm makers are notoriously open to the accessible.

The curators do not frantically search for the political. They are flooded by it in the course of their viewing process. They are constantly sorting and searching for what is significant.

The German Competition shows films that gave the curators no peace for weeks: Films that polarize in a healthy way. Bang! And those who watch the International Competition will also be splendidly entertained, but will probably want to take to the streets worldwide. Well. Keep dawdling? Or spread the word!?

As we see it, much more needs to happen than what is currently happening socially and politically. And we think that the short film – short and impactful – is a contemporary explosive medium to strengthen a healthy sense of community. – Welcome to the festival!
