Odense International Film Festival unveils 2022 winners

Odense International Film Festival has unveiled the complete list of award winners for 2022 festival, which took place in Odense (Denmark) from August 29-September 4.

OFF – Odense International Film Festival is Denmark’s international short film festival, and with its launch in 1975, it is also the country’s oldest film festival. Odense International Film Festival is accredited by the Academy Awards (accredited by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences) and the European Film Awards (accredited by the European Film Academy). Winners of H.C. Andersen Award, Best Danish Short Film, Børge Ring Award and Best Short Documentary will be eligible for consideration in the short film categories of the Academy Awards® without the standard theatrical run, provided the films otherwise complies with the Academy Rules.

A record-breaking total of 4077 short films found their way to the OFF – Denmark’s eldest and the only Academy Award® and European Film Awards (EFA) qualifying film festival, according to the official announcement published on the OFF website.

Selected for this year’s competition were 123 wild, provocative, ravishing, wistful and sharp short films, submitted from almost every corner of the world – from Senegal to Estonia, from Pakistan to Chile. A total number of 40 countries were represented in the competition program of 2022 Odense International Film Festival.

Andersen Award) directed by Ramata-Toulaye Sy, “Nest” (winner of Best Danish Short Film) directed by Hlynur Pálmason, “The Seine’s Tears” (Les Larmes De La Seine)” (winner of Børge Ring Award) directed by Yanis Belaid, Eliot Benard, Nicolas Mayeur, Etienne Moulin, Hadrien Pinot, Lisa Vicente, Philippine Singer, Alice Letailleur and “The Game” (winner of Best Short Documentary) by Andreas Haubjerg won the best awards in the Oscar-qualifying categories and earned the OFF’s official Academy nomination.

The Danish short film “Nest” by Hlynur Pálmason was recognized as the OFF’s Short Film Candidate for the European Film Awards (EFA).

Odense International Film Festival 2022 winners

International Competition

H.C. Andersen Award

The H.C. Andersen Award honors the best short film in the International Competition and is Oscar qualifying. The winner receives a statuette and 35,000 DKK.

WINNER: “Astel” by Ramata-Toulaye Sy from Senegal, France.

“Astel” by Ramata-Toulaye Sy won the H.C. Andersen Award of the 2022 Odense International Film Festival and earned OFF’s official Academy nomination. The Senegalese-French drama won the H.C. Andersen Award in competition with “Lili Alone” by Zou Jing from China and “Bestia” by Hugo Covarrubias from Chile.

Storyteller Award

The Storyteller Award goes to the international short film with the best storytelling abilities. The prize comes with 15,000 DKK.

WINNER: “Lili Alone” by Zou Jing from China.

The Storyteller Award of the 2022 Odense International Film Festival went to the Chinese short film “Lili Alone” by Zou Jing. Other nominees in this award category were “The Window (ما بعد آب)” by Sarah Kaskas from Lebanon and “Vadiyar” by Marjan Khosravi from Iran.

Artist Award

The Artist Award goes to the international short film with the strongest artistic expression. It comes with 15,000 DKK.

WINNER: “The Shift (Il turno)” by Chiara Marotta and Loris Giuseppe Nese from Italy.

The Italian “The Shift (Il turno)” by Chiara Marotta and Loris Giuseppe Nese won the Artist Award of the 2022 Odense International Film Festival. The Chilean “Bestia” by Hugo Covarrubias and the Dutch/Slovenian “Techno, Mama” by Saulius Baradinskas were the nominees for the award.

Short Film Candidate for the European Film Awards (EFA) 2022

WINNER: “Nest” directed by Hlynur Pálmason from Denmark.

The jury of the 2022 Odense International Film Festival has picked the the Danish short film “Nest” directed by Hlynur Pálmason as the OFF’s candidate for the European Film Awards nomination.

Danish Competition

Best Danish Short Film

The award is Oscar qualifying and goes to the best Danish short film. The winner receives 20,000 DKK.

WINNER: “Nest” by Hlynur Pálmason from Denmark.

“Nest” by Hlynur Pálmason grabbed the Best Danish Short Film of the 2022 Odense International Film Festival and earned the OFF’s official Academy nomination. “Knight of Fortune (Ridder Lykke)” by Lasse Lyskjær Noer and “Summer With Bjørn (Bjørn på Langeland)” by Joachim Morre were the nominees for the award.

Filmfyn Talent Award

Filmfyn Talent Award goes to the Danish short film that shows vision and talent. The prize comes with 15,000 DKK.

WINNER: “The Dinner (Middagen)” by Marco Lawson from Denmark.

The Filmfyn Talent Award of the 2022 Odense International Film Festival went to the “The Dinner (Middagen)” by Marco Lawson from Denmark. “Dandelion (Mælkebøttebørn)” by Joey Moe and “Shegod (Hungud)” by Sara Hjort Ditlevsen were also nominated to win the prize.

Best Danish Actor

WINNER: Boy Ewald for “Katastrofer”.

Boy Ewald won the Best Danish Actor of the 2022 Odense International Film Festival for portrayal of Liv in the “Katastrofer” directed by Tone Ottilie. Ellen Fensbo for “Tora” and Nicolai Jørgensen for “Free Men (Frie Mænd)” were nominated for the award.

Nominees for The Robert Award: Best Short Film Fiction/Animation

5 short films have been announced as nominees for The Robert Award (Best Short Film Fiction/Animation).

Animation Competition

Børge Ring Award

The Børge Ring Award honors the best animated short film and the award is Oscar qualifying. The winner receives 15,000 DKK.

WINNER: “The Seine’s Tears” (Les Larmes De La Seine)” by Yanis Belaid, Eliot Benard, Nicolas Mayeur, Etienne Moulin, Hadrien Pinot, Lisa Vicente, Philippine Singer, Alice Letailleur from France.

The Børge Ring Award of the 2022 Odense International Film Festival went to the French animated short film “The Seine’s Tears” (Les Larmes De La Seine)” directed by Yanis Belaid, Eliot Benard, Nicolas Mayeur, Etienne Moulin, Hadrien Pinot, Lisa Vicente, Philippine Singer, Alice Letailleur. “Fury (Furia)” by Julia Siuda from Poland and “I’ll Be Your Kettle” by Tobias Rud from Denmark were nominated to win the award.

Animation Talent Award

Animation Talent Award goes to the Danish animator with an extraordinary animation short. The award comes with 10,000 DKK.

WINNER: “I’ll Be Your Kettle” by Tobias Rud from Denmark.

“I’ll Be Your Kettle” by Tobias Rud from Denmark won the Animation Talent Award of the 2022 Odense International Film Festival. “The General’s Room (La Chambre du Général)” by Georges Marion and “Lament” by Anne Sinéad Hodgers, both from Denmark, were also nominated for the award.

Documentary Competition

Best Short Documentary

The award honors the best documentary short and the award is Oscar qualifying. It comes with 15,000 DKK.

WINNER: “The Game” by Andreas Haubjerg from Denmark.

The Danish short documentary “The Game” directed by Andreas Haubjerg won the Best Short Documentary award of the 2022 Odense International Film Festival. The other nominees in this award category were The Danish “Ghosts of Moria” by Florian Elabdi and Michael Graversen and the Dutch-Slovenian “You Can’t Automate Me” by Katarina Jazbec.

Soapbox Award

The Soapbox Award goes to the documentary that uses the format best and has a meaningful influence on society. The winner receives 10,000 DKK.

WINNER: “How I Like It” by Nida Mehboob from Pakistan.

The Pakistani documentary “How I Like It” directed by Nida Mehboob won the Soapbox Award of the 2022 Odense International Film Festival in competition with the nominated “A Day’s Work” by Max Kerkhoff from Germany and “Nuisance Bear” by Jack Weisman and Gabriela Osio Vanden from Canada.

Youth Competition

Youth Jury Award

The Youth Jury Award goes to the best youth film in competition selected among the films chosen from the full selection. The winner receives 10,000 DKK.

WINNER: “The Stupid Boy” by Phil Dunn from United Kingdom.

“The Stupid Boy” directed by Phil Dunn from United Kingdom grabbed the Youth Jury Award of the 2022 Odense International Film Festival in competition with the Danish nominated “The Dinner (Middagen)” by Marco Lawson and “The Deportation of a Model Citizen” by Jacob Thomas Pilgaard.

Audience Award

WINNER: “The Stupid Boy” by Phil Dunn from United Kingdom.

Phil Dunn’s “The Stupid Boy” from United Kingdom received the best votes from the public audience and owned the Audience Award in the Youth Competition section of the festival.

The award-winning films of the 2022 Odense International Film Festival went on screen on Sunday, September 4, at the Café Biografen in Odense.
