Show Me Shorts unveils 2022 lineup

Show Me Shorts, accredited by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) as an Academy Award® qualifying festival for short film categories, has announced the complete lineup for 2022 festival, which is scheduled to take place at 36 cinemas and community venues nationwide in New Zealand from October 7-30.

Show Me Shorts, Aotearoa’s biggest short film festival, is New Zealand’s first Academy Award®-accredited festival, with the Best Film and Best International Film award winners becoming eligible for nomination for the Oscars.

The Sampler

“The Sampler” program section of the 2022 Show Me Shorts features 8 short films, which highlight everything the full Show Me Shorts program has to offer. The lineup in this program section include short films from New Zealand, The Netherlands, Ireland, Singapore, Germany and Australia. “Datsun” by Mark Albiston and “Shark” by Nash Edgerton are the highlights.

Dania Bdeir’s “Warsha”, winner of the Best Short Film in the International Competition section of the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, is highlight of this program section.

8 character-driven short films from a pregnant woman who has been selected as an astronaut (“Unbound” by Sarah Moshman), a stripper cutting loose (“Better Daze – Hoss” by Zoe Mcintosh) and an archeologist who has discovered something she can’t quite believe (“Erratum” by Giulio Callegari) makes up the “Breaking Expectations” program section of the 2022 Show Me Shorts Film Festival. These bold and daring short films treat the audience to a dose of overachievement, eccentricity and sparkle. Erich Rettstadt’s “Tank Fairy”, winner of the special jury prize for Best LGBTQ+ Short at the 2022 Palm Springs International ShortFest, is highlight of this program section.

They will be stalked by unknown malevolent figures, possessed by an alien force, and get lost in a watery netherworld. The short films are from France, New Zealand, Italy, Australia and UK.

Isaac Bell Spotlight

The “Isaac Bell Spotlight” program section of the 2022 Show Me Shorts features an hour-long showcase of five films by Isaac Bell, a Whangarei-raised (Ngāpuhi) and now Christchurch-based filmmaker known for sci-fi films that have a dreamy nostalgic quality.

Spider/Bear/Shark Trilogy

This online session contains a critically acclaimed trilogy of shock comedy short films by Australian director Nash Edgerton featuring Rose Byrne, Teresa Palmer and Mirrah Foulkes.

  • “Spider” (part one) – A prank-loving man takes things too far with his girlfriend. It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye.
  • “Bear” (part two) – Jack has the perfect birthday surprise planned for his new girlfriend Emelie. Sometimes, though, plans go horrifically wrong.
  • “Shark” (part three) – Rose Byrne stars as Sofie, a woman who loves pranks just as much as her husband Jack.
